When photographing a wedding reception, I sing along and sometimes even dance to the music. I always pay attention to the playlists because I always ask myself, what music would I play at my wedding? What songs must play during the reception vs. dinner? I will give my DJ a separate list for dinner exclusives, including music that you don’t really dance to, such as Archie, Marry Me by Alvvays.
I am sharing with you all the songs I would want to play at my wedding. The playlist is more than 15 hours long, so I couldn’t play all of it. The top 100 are an absolute must for the dance floor, whether we are getting down to Cardi B or slow-dancing to Lifehouse.
My music tastes, in general, range from the 60s to today; seriously, I could fill an entire playlist with each decade of my favorite songs. Most music is on the table for me. It could be punk rock, pop, country, r&B, rap, disco, folk, alternative, rock, etc.
There will be a healthy amount of oldies music. I love oldies music at weddings; Frankie Valli and the Four Seasons, The Beach Boys, ABBA, and Blondie, to name a few. It’s music that you, your best friend, cousin, and grandma can enjoy; something for everyone.
You may look at this list and realize it is not a typical wedding list. There is some music you probably haven’t heard of. For example, a lesser-known band, Meg & Dia, is my favorite, and Less of Me is a must-play song. That band got me through high school, and I still listen to them frequently. They broke up and got back together a few years ago, and I am ecstatic about it.
The last song I want to play, the very last song before we head to the after party, is Lifehouse’s You and Me. Why? Not just because it’s a wonderful song but because it would play at all my school dances when I had no date, and it was alwayyyssss the last song. Literally every dance, it was the guaranteed night-ender song. 2007-2010 was wild, ya’ll.
Heaven Is A Place On Earth is an absolute must because my partner and I LOVE that song. Every time it comes on, I see him singing it. He doesn’t always sing along to songs; as a pianist, he is usually actively listening to and digesting music. ABBA is the same for us. We love ABBA.
This embedded playlist only shows the first 100, but go ahead and follow the playlist for the full list. What is your favorite song on my wedding playlist? I would love to know!
